Choosing Roman or Venetian Blinds

When it comes to choosing a blind style for certain rooms in your house, it largely comes down to personal preference. Different blinds have their own look and feel that can alter the appearance of your house, from both inside and outside, so it’s important to consider the different options. The team at Angel Blinds and Shutters are here to help you weigh up the benefits of both Roman and Venetian blinds, so you can decide whether either of these blinds are the right ones for you and your home.

Roman blinds

  • The fabric is usually lined to improve the light filtration and shading of the room.
  • Made from a highly durable fabric.
  • Easy functionality with a cord. When retracted the blind material folds back into pleats, creating a drapery effect of the fabric. Similarly, the blind can be released to fall down the full length of the window, covering the whole area.
  • Achieves a sophisticated appearance and can complement either a traditional or contemporary setting.
  • Available in almost any fabric, pattern or colour to suit your interior style.
  • Can be mould and mildew resistant so they are easier to maintain.
  • Doesn’t require as much cleaning as the Venetian blind, however when it does need cleaning it is a bit trickier than the Venetian. The easiest way to clean them is to vacuum the surface or to take down the whole blind and wash it in warm, soapy water.

Venetian blinds

  • A choice of slat widths to achieve your desired look.
  • A wide range of materials e.g. wood, timber, Upvc, plastic and aluminium.
  • Easily adjustable with a cord that can lower or retract the blind; with a wand that can be twisted to alter the angle of the slats so you have complete control over the quantity of light that enters the room.
  • Depending on the type of material you choose depends on the price bracket. Plastic and Upvc tend to be the most affordable, but it is worth considering which materials will be the most durable in the long run and not necessarily the cheapest.
  • Venetian blinds in general tend to be cheaper than Roman but as mentioned previously, it depends on the type of material you choose.
  • They tend to collect more dust as there are numerous slats so therefore require more frequent cleaning than the Roman blind.

After looking at the benefits of both a Venetian and a Roman blind, there are also a few other factors that are worth considering:

  • How much light you want in the room. For instance if you require total darkness for a bedroom, then it might be worth considering the Roman blind as the fabric is thicker and has a similar appearance to a curtain but with the functionality of a blind.
  • If it’s important for you to have complete control over the lighting levels, then a Venetian blind would be perfect as you can alter the angle of the slats to suit.
  • The actual fitting of the blind and how much space you have to use. For instance, the Venetian blind will take more room in and around the window, so take into consideration the type of room it is for. A child’s room would not be the best option as it is likely to get knocked around and damaged, whereas you could get a Roman blind to fit more neatly inside the space of the window.
