Advantages of Interior Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters have become increasingly popular over the last few decades, offering a stylish and contemporary alternative to the traditional blind. But for those of you who are considering upgrading your house with new window dressings, there are a few things to know first about plantation shutter to help you make your mind up.

What is a plantation shutter?

A plantation shutter is a window dressing option, like a curtain or blind, that is built in to your windows to give an elegant appearance and improve the aesthetics of your property. The plantation shutter can be likened to blinds, but they don’t lift up or down, instead they are made up of slats that can be tilted to open up and let in light and air, whilst offering privacy when needed.

The plantation shutter differs to the traditional shutter. With smaller and narrower louvres, the plantation shutter is now the cost commonly installed shutter as it allows optimum light and airflow.

How do they function?

Generally speaking, plantation shutters are made from two panels that are each hinged to the side of the frame, so they open outwards like a double door. Others can be made from four panels that open to the side in a bi-folding motion. The window size determines how many panels need to be used and which way they will open.

What’s rooms in the home are they most suitable for?

Plantation shutters are largely popular in kitchens. In a kitchen it is important to have good ventilation and a durable material that can withstand hot and humid environments, which is exactly what the shutter can offer. They can also be easily wiped clean in case of accidental spillages or splashes.

What are the main advantages of plantation shutters?

  •  Popular in warmer climates as they offer shade whilst encouraging a natural air flow creating a cooling and relaxing environment.
  • The majority of plantation shutters are made from solid wood, however they are also available in aluminium and Pvc to meet all tastes and styles.
  • Regardless of the size or shape of your window, they can be custom made to perfectly fit any window, whether round, diamond shaped or arched.
  • If you want to add a personal touch you can add drapes over the top. This will soften the look and allow you to inject your taste and style.
  • The solid shutter acts as a barrier, adding extra security to your home, reducing noise and helping to regulate the room temperature, keeping it cooler in summer months and better insulated in the winter.
